We’ve found that trying new and intriguing flavors is always a fun and enriching experience and helps us step out of our comfort zone.

In today’s syrup spotlight edition, we’re taking a closer look at Guava, an intriguing and truly delicious shaved ice and snow cone syrup flavor.

What is guava?
Though guavas are rather uncommon in the United States, they are cultivated in many tropical and subtropical regions. They are native to Mexico, Central America, and the northern part of South America. Guavas are also common in parts of the Indian subcontinent and the Middle East.

The guava fruit grows on a small tree or evergreen shrub, that has characteristically tough branches that don’t easily break, glossy, green, oval-shaped leaves, and white, fragrant flowers.

The fruit itself is oval-shaped and is roughly the size of a tennis ball. It is covered in a tough, yellow, green, or maroon skin with a white, pink, red, or yellow inner flesh containing numerous, white seeds which are also edible. Guavas have a strong lemon-like fragrance, yet have a sweet flavor and texture that’s similar to a combination of pear and strawberry.
